Keegan Holt Harrison was born on Wednesday, September 12, 2007, with a congenital heart defect known as Tetralogy of Fallot. After 10 hours of surgery on the first day, the doctors believed the defect had been repaired, but Keegan was on ECMO support. A large hematoma developed on the ventrical septal wall over the next few days, and it became apparent that Keegan would need a new heart. After only 48 hours on the transplant list, Keegan received the beautiful gift of a new heart when he was only 1 week old. We are eternally grateful to his donor family for such a strong, amazing heart. Thank you to everyone who cared for Keegan at Children's Medical Center of Dallas. He would not be the fiery little one he is today without each and everyone of the exceptional surgeons, doctors, nurses, and staff who cared for him.
Keegan is now two years old and had NO evidence of rejection at his annual biopsy. Keegan loves anything on wheels, Elmo, his dog, being pushed around the neighborhood on his trike, being outside, and giving hi-fives. Keegan has also been battling intestinal failure without a true diagnosis, spending only 21 days out of the hospital since October 2008. In March 2009, we brought him to Children's Hospital of Boston in search of some answers that would help Keegan be able to live a more normal life at home. Keegan came home in May 2009 on full tube feeds and no IV nutrition. He continues to have problems with his intestines, liver, blood, skin, kidneys, and of course, his heart, but he is HOME and getting stronger daily. We appreciate so much the prayers of our family and friends as we continue our search. Please follow along with Keegan's journey on his new site (link below).
